Recycled M&Ms, anyone?

You know that fashion-meets-green handbags have been successfully executed when they're carried around by both Cameron Diaz (who's a total eco femme) and Paris Hilton (who couldn't give a stuff about the environment, but certainly knows her way around a wardrobe). So whether you like Ecoist purses for their environmental bent, or just because they're eye-popping cool, it doesn't really matter: you're doing the world a favour either way. For every recycled candy-wrapper handbag sold, US company Ecoist plants a tree (thanks to their partnership with Trees for the Future), which has already resulted in over 10,000 extra trees now sprinkled throughout Haiti, India, and West Africa. Ecoist is blunt, candid and realistic about their stance: "It is our basic assumption that no consumer will purchase our products because we are on the mission to save the Earth," reads the website. "Rather, people will buy what looks good on them, or what's hot, or what celebrities are wearing." That's why despite the materials they're using -- candy wrappers, food packages, billboards, and other materials that would otherwise end up in landfills -- Ecoist's products look damn hot, and you'll find them gracing the pages of magazines such as US Elle. As for what 'Ecoist' actually means, they have an answer for that too: "An individual that lives a modern, eco-minded lifestyle." I love these guys.
