A few hundred years ago, larger houses had dedicated chambers for concocting homemade tinctures, tonics and potions, apothecary-style. The woman of the house knew which herbs, oils, waxes and ingredients to blend
for common ailments, cleaning products, linen waters, insect repellents and cosmetics. In the days before plumbing and refrigeration, minimising unpleasant odours was also an important task!
From this wonderful tradition has sprung a New World candle range with Old World values. Developed by an Australian man, drawing on his Hungarian immigrant family's past and the rich, centuries-old history of Hungarian perfumery and candle making, Ecoya was born.
States the family-owned business: "Over four years and countless hours were spent perfecting fragrance blends and ensuring Ecoya's scent throw (the distance away from the flame that the scent distributes) is extraordinary." And they describe their product using magical herblore terms: "Be spellbound by the enchanting fragrances lovingly created with natural ingredients."
The most important aspect for us, the consumers, is that Ecoya is super environmentally-friendly. Made from natural soy waxes rather than paraffin (produced by the petroleum industry), the candles burn for a third longer than paraffin and produce 90 percent less carbon soot into the atmosphere. Ecoya also uses 100% pure cotton (lead free) wicks, and its products are completely biodegradable.
There are 12 scents to ooh and aah over, but Psyched In Stilettos has already honed in on Lotus Flower, for "spiritual calmness". Prices from $AU12.95; check out www.ecoya.com.au.
