Like hotels, day spas use obscene amounts of water for their treatments and laundering. Well, here's the nice bit. The Carbon Reduction Institute (CRI), Sydney International Spa & Beauty Expo, Australasian Spa Association and Spa Australasia have introduced a Low Carbon Spa and Beauty Initiative, encouraging all day spas, beauty salons, wellness and fitness centres to consider their effects on the environment. The goal? To reduce the spa and beauty industry's impact on climate change by 20% before 2015. They'll do this by reducing power, water and waste by rewarding the offset of emissions with carbon credits -- and then awarding Low Carbon (LowCO2) or Carbon Neutral (NoCO2) business certification.
This makes the Spa & Beauty industry one of the first in the world to take joint voluntary action against climate change. So the next time you visit your spa or salon, challenge your therapist on what steps they are taking to reduce their impact... and look for the CRI logo. Or simply book a therapist (such as Desert Pea) to visit you in the comfort of your own home.
