Deadly candles

I can't imagine there's anyone on earth who doesn't like candles (expect paranoid mothers who are always groaning 'you might set the curtains on fire!'). Candles are soothing, offer mellow lighting and incredible atmosphere, and the very process of lighting, burning, and/or blowing them out can be very ritualistic. You can meditate by gazing into a candle flame, or 'clear' an area using an extinguished candle's smoke.

There's only one rule when it comes to candles, and it's so obvious - yet so few people know it.

If you're burning a candle, that means you're breathing it in too, so au naturel candles are the only way to go. Just like organic food, candles made from all-natural ingredients are much better for your insides - they won't emit toxic chemicals into the air for extended periods of time, then settle on furniture and carpet where they can be touched and ingested by children, adults and pets. This is particularly important if you adore scented and/or 'slow burning' jumbo candles.

Here's the frightening part: your average scented candle may contain lead particles, paraffin, mercury, aromachemicals, and a variety of other toxins, including metal wicks. In large amounts, candle emissions can harm your nervous system, heart, and circulatory system, particularly in children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

On your candle shopping list should be anything devoid of additives and nasties. The best varieties are made of substances such as soy, natural oils and beeswax, with cotton wicks. Some of my favourite candles include the ones by Organic Home, Romich Aromatherapy, Nature's Symphony and Shizen (who place real crystals inside the wax!)

As for using essential oil burners, never use 'fragrance oils' - they're nasty little artificially created substances containing synthetic chemicals. Pure, (certified organic if possible) plant-derived essential oils are the only way to go - read the label to see what's inside before purchasing. Proper essential oils (like those from In Essence, Jurlique and Perfect Potion - who offer chakra oils) can offer calming and therapeutic effects.
